Neonatal Plasma Toolkit for Failure of Passive Transfer

Project Name: Neonatal Plasma Toolkit for Failure of Passive Transfer
Organization: Orphan Kitten Project
Location: California

Our partners at the Orphan Kitten Project at UC Davis have developed an innovative new protocol that delivers blood plasma treatments to vulnerable newborn kittens. This breakthrough offers support for kittens who haven’t received essential antibodies from their mothers. During the first 48 hours of life, kittens rely on colostrum, a nutrient and antibody-rich fluid produced by their mother, to help build their immune systems. Without a mom, orphaned kittens miss this vital protection and face a far higher risk of illness. Through the use of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) injections, these tiny kittens can now receive the antibodies they need to strengthen their immunity and improve their chances of survival. Thanks to this grant, UC Davis was able to bring this lifesaving protocol to reality, helping save more orphaned newborn kittens when they need it most.
