Neonatal Kitten Youth Program

Project Name: Neonatal Kitten Youth Program
Organization: KC Pet Project
Location: Missouri

Kira’s Fund was created in memory of Kira Serisky, a beloved teen foster parent, and this grant put her legacy in the hands of two teen fosters, Kara and Hana.

They each received an incubator for their home, giving them what they needed to care for neonatal kittens around the clock. Both dream of becoming veterinary technicians, and the hands-on experience gave them a head start. With the help of their parents, they helped care for 30 kittens in one kitten season.

One of those kittens was Moonpie, who arrived as a critical 3-week-old stray. Within 24 hours, she was settled in with Kara, who started volunteering at age 10. When Moonpie developed severe diarrhea and her blood sugar dropped, Kara checked her glucose every two hours for about a week, gave her fluids, and kept her warm in the incubator. Moonpie pulled through, started eating on her own, and was thriving.
