Kitty Cadets brought high school students into the shelter for weekly humane education lessons and hands-on time with kittens. Eight students enrolled and showed up every week, learning about intake, medical care, TNR, cat behavior, safe handling, and fostering. The grant paid for a projector and screen for the classroom and a humane educator to lead the program.
The cadets also gave extra attention to shy, hissy kittens, helping them learn to trust people and become more adoptable. In all, 80 kittens were impacted.
Two cadets even convinced their parents to try fostering. They cared for two underage kittens with upper respiratory infections and giardia, learning to give medication along the way.
It’s a fitting tribute to Kira Serisky, a beloved teen foster parent whose legacy lives on through this grant funding.
