Kitten Ringworm Study

Orphan Kitten Club is excited to fund UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital’s cutting-edge Kitten Ringworm Study. This ongoing, non-invasive research aims to improve ringworm treatment options for kittens by evaluating both the effectiveness and safety of different therapies.

The study focuses on two primary treatments: itraconazole, an oral antifungal medication, and topical therapy. Researchers are comparing the effectiveness and cure rates of three treatment regimens:

• Oral itraconazole plus focal topical therapy
• Oral itraconazole alone
• Focal topical therapy alone

Unlike many traditional treatments that use lime sulfur, which is both unpleasant and uncomfortable, this study offers a more comfortable alternative for the kittens. Participants are randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups, and the study is triple-masked to ensure unbiased results—no one knows which kittens receive which treatment.

The study includes 40 kittens in each of the three treatment groups, all ranging in age from newborn to 12 weeks. As this research progresses, we look forward to sharing the findings and advancing the care for kittens affected by ringworm.
