Sally arrived at just eight weeks old with what her rescuers described as a “weird ribcage.” Diagnostic X-rays revealed a severe case of pectus excavatum, a condition causing the chest to cave inward, leaving her unable to play or enjoy normal kitten activities without experiencing respiratory distress. Surgery was her only path to a full life.
A board-certified surgeon performed the procedure, and Sally went home with a loving foster who happened to be a vet tech, perfectly equipped to monitor her external splint and administer her medications. Though her prognosis was initially guarded, four weeks after surgery she had made a remarkable 90 percent recovery.
